Eremo di San Michele Arcangelo

The Eremo di San Michele Arcangelo sits at roughly 1220 meters on Mount Altino in the Aurunci Mountains, with stone walls enclosing a natural cave. The site combines a Neo-Gothic structure built in the 1890s with a cave sanctuary that merges into the mountainside.

Records from the 9th century document this religious site as a place of spiritual refuge in the mountain region. The structure visible today, marked by its Neo-Gothic style, was reconstructed and updated in the 1890s.

Saint Michael holds deep meaning for the local community, drawing visitors who come to pray and reflect in this remote setting. The hermitage serves as a spiritual anchor for the people of the surrounding villages and their sense of place.

The main trail to reach the hermitage starts from Rifugio Pornito and covers about seven kilometers, taking roughly ninety minutes of hiking. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential for this mountain walk, especially during warmer months.

A natural spring emerges from the rock walls and collects in basins within the church structure, providing water at this elevated mountain location. This blend of natural water flow and human construction reveals how early inhabitants designed the place for long-term habitation.
