Torre Astura

A stone fortress rises from a peninsula at the southeastern end of the Bay of Antium, connected to land by a narrow causeway.

The Frangipani family built the fortification in 1268 atop the ruins of a Roman seaside estate. Ownership later passed to the Colonna family, who controlled and expanded the complex for centuries.

The site preserves architectural elements from multiple periods, combining Roman foundations with medieval defensive structures and Renaissance modifications.

Access is restricted due to the site's proximity to military facilities and requires advance permission. When planning a visit, note that the narrow causeway may become impassable during rough sea conditions.

Below the water surface around the peninsula lie ancient Roman remains that become visible during clear conditions. On land, traces of old harbor walls and foundations reveal the original extent of the estate.
