Nettuno

Nettuno is a commune on the Tyrrhenian coast in the Lazio region, located about 60 kilometers south of Rome. The medieval quarter shows stone buildings and narrow lanes, while modern residential areas and beaches line the waterfront.

The town began in the Middle Ages as a fortified harbor and grew over centuries into a fishing village. In January 1944, Allied forces landed here during Operation Shingle, leading to heavy fighting in the surrounding countryside.

American soldiers brought baseball to the town after World War II, creating a tradition that turned it into one of Italy's leading centers for the sport. Local teams compete regularly in national leagues, and their games often draw families and fans from across the region.

Regional trains run several times daily from Roma Termini station, with the journey taking about an hour. The old quarter and beach are both within walking distance from the station, and most sites sit in a compact area.

The American military cemetery sits just outside the town center and holds the graves of 7,860 soldiers who fell during the Italian campaigns. White marble crosses and Stars of David stand in long rows across manicured lawns that open toward the sea.
