Fontana del dio Nettuno, Marble fountain in Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, Nettuno, Italy.
The Fountain of Neptune is a marble sculpture in Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini depicting the sea god in a shell chariot drawn by horses. The piece sits above a large water basin that anchors the entire composition.
The original travertine statue was sculpted by Ottavio De Angelis in 1882 to commemorate the opening of the Albano-Nettuno railway line. Between 1949 and 1950, local artist Randolfo Belleudi added the shell chariot and horses, transforming the initial design.
The fountain's name connects directly to the city of Nettuno, which takes its name from the sea god depicted here. Visitors can see how this work reflects the town's relationship with the sea and its maritime character today.
The fountain sits in Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini at the town center and is easy to reach on foot from most locations. The square is freely accessible and offers space to walk around and view the sculpture from different angles.
Few visitors realize the sculpture was originally a single figure before local artist Belleudi dramatically expanded it into a multi-figure composition in the post-war years. This transformation made it a striking focal point that now defines the entire square.
