Aprilia, Commune in Latina Province, Italy
Aprilia is a commune in the province of Latina, located about 36 kilometers (22 miles) south of Rome in the central Italian region of Lazio. The settlement occupies flat terrain between the coastal plain and the Alban Hills.
The settlement was founded in 1936 as part of a nationwide project to drain marshland and create new agricultural areas. World War II damaged large sections of the layout, which were rebuilt afterward.
The name refers to the Roman month of April, when the town received its official foundation. The community celebrates several anniversaries that strengthen awareness of its postwar identity.
The town lies along the Via Pontina, a major road artery leading to Rome and the coast. Rail connections ease access to surrounding towns and regional centers.
The area cultivates about 3,700 hectares (9,100 acres) of grapevines that produce DOC wines. The varieties Trebbiano, Merlot and Sangiovese characterize local production.
