Okonomi-mura, Food theme park in Shintenchi, Japan
Okonomi-mura is a four-story building in the Shintenchi neighborhood of Hiroshima, housing around 25 small restaurants that each focus on okonomiyaki. Every stall has its own recipe and its own combination of toppings and fillings.
The concept grew from street food stands that appeared in post-war Hiroshima during the 1950s, when simple, affordable food was needed for large numbers of people. The building opened in December 1965, giving the tradition a permanent home.
Here you can watch okonomiyaki being prepared in the Hiroshima style, where ingredients are layered on top of each other rather than mixed together. This approach sets the local version apart from other regional styles found across Japan.
The building is located in Shintenchi and is easy to reach on foot from several tram and train stops in the area. Many of the restaurants offer English menus, which helps visitors choose without knowing Japanese.
All the dishes served here use a special okonomiyaki sauce made exclusively for this location by Sun Foods, which you cannot find anywhere else. This gives the food a shared flavor thread across all the different stalls, even though each one cooks in its own way.
