サロンシネマ, Independent movie theater in Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Japan
Salon Cinema is an independent movie theater on the eighth floor of the Toei Plaza Building in Naka Ward, Hiroshima. It has two screening rooms of different sizes, which allows two films to run at the same time.
The cinema opened in 2014 as a successor to the original Salon Cinema in Takanobashi, which had to close after structural problems with its building. The move allowed it to carry on serving the same audience from a new location.
The cinema shows independent films, foreign productions, and Japanese works that rarely reach mainstream screens, drawing a regular audience that seeks out this kind of programming. It has become a gathering point for film lovers in Hiroshima.
The theater sits on the eighth floor of an office building and is reached by elevator, so there are no stairs to worry about. Checking the weekly schedule before visiting is a good idea, as the two rooms show different films that rotate regularly.
Before each screening, a staff member introduces the film from a small podium, a tradition that traces back to the silent film era, when live narrators called benshi explained the story to audiences. This short introduction is still part of every visit today.
