Utsubuki-tamagawa

Utsubuki-tamagawa is a preservation district featuring traditional storehouses from the Edo period with white walls and dark wooden beams lining both sides of the Tamagawa River. The streets form a continuous view of old merchant architecture that has been maintained across generations.

This area developed during the Edo period as a trading hub, with the river serving as a key route for moving goods. The buildings were carefully preserved and reflect the economic importance the place once held for the region.

Artisans work in restored buildings, creating traditional incense and crafts using techniques passed down over centuries. You can watch them practice their skills in open workshops as you walk through the streets.

The area is reachable from JR West Kurayoshi Station, and guided walks are available year-round at the tourist information center. The flat paths along the river are easy to navigate, and most areas are clearly marked.

A network of small water channels runs alongside the streets, originally used by merchants for daily tasks and fire prevention. These practical features show the cleverness of medieval planning and are a fascinating detail to discover today.
