Ise Site

Ise Site is an archaeological complex spanning about 700 meters from east to west and 450 meters from north to south, containing building foundations from multiple ancient periods. The remains show evidence of different settlement phases across several centuries.

Excavations beginning in 1981 uncovered substantial structures from the Yayoi period, including fortifications with double moats and wooden palisades dating to the 2nd century. This era marked a time when defensive settlements dominated the region.

The L-shaped layout of the building foundations reveals how this place functioned as a center for governance and ceremonial activities in ancient times. The arrangement shows how people organized their most important public spaces within the settlement.

The site is open to visitors and located about a 10-minute walk from Rittō Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line. The terrain is relatively flat, making it easy to walk around and view the various archaeological remains.

The site features pentagonal pit dwellings with construction patterns found nowhere else but in coastal settlements along Japan's shores. This distinctive building style offers rare insight into regional construction practices of that period.
