Colpach Castle, Medieval castle in Colpach-Bas, Luxembourg.
Colpach Castle is a stone building with an elegant facade set within extensive grounds containing formal gardens. The estate features meandering pathways, ornamental plantings and a lake with a central island.
The structure was built in the 14th century as a fortified stronghold and served its defensive purpose for centuries. In 1747, the Pforzheim family transformed it into a residential manor house.
The castle served as a gathering place for European intellectuals between the World Wars, drawing politicians, writers and artists to its rooms. Under Emile Mayrisch's direction, it became a space where creative minds exchanged ideas.
The grounds can be explored from the outside, with gardens and the lake accessible to visitors. The buildings themselves house a medical facility and are not open to the general public.
The composer Franz Liszt spent his final days at the castle in 1886 while visiting Hungarian painter Michael Munkácsy. This brief visit marked one of the last stops in Liszt's remarkable life.
