Notojima Aquarium, Public aquarium in Nanao, Japan

Notojima Aquarium is a public facility in Nanao housing tens of thousands of marine animals across numerous tanks. The exhibits feature whale sharks and Pacific white-sided dolphins in large enclosures, along with many other saltwater species.

The facility opened in 1982 and became the largest marine installation along the Sea of Japan coast. It has since developed into an important center for studying and displaying marine life in the region.

The aquarium displays marine life from waters surrounding the Noto Peninsula. Visitors can observe fish and creatures that are native to this coastal region.

The facility is open during daytime hours throughout most of the year, though hours may shift with the seasons. Plan for a few hours to move through the different tank areas at a comfortable pace.

A special section recreates giant kelp forest habitats filled with thousands of small fish creating a natural ecosystem display. This area represents one of the largest exhibits of its kind in Japan and offers a rare look at this underwater environment.
