Fort Willem I, Military fort in Caberg district, Maastricht, Netherlands.
Fort Willem I is a pentagonal fortification in Maastricht featuring a central casemate connected by underground galleries. Brick walls are punctuated with shooting holes around the entire perimeter of the structure.
Construction began in 1815 following French military designs to strengthen Maastricht's northern defensive positions. The fortification was built during a period when the region was modernizing its defenses.
The fort takes its name from King Willem I of the Netherlands, who visited the construction site in June 1815. This royal visit during the building phase left a lasting mark on the site's identity.
The site now serves as a children's playground and student association housing since 1994. Visitors can explore the grounds, but it is helpful to check current access conditions beforehand.
During the Interbellum period, the garrison used a dedicated chamber within the fort for military gas training. This historical space reveals a lesser-known aspect of the fortification's operational past.
