Kapel in 't Zand

Kapel in 't Zand is a pilgrimage chapel in Roermond with a special connection to a nearby monastery. A paved path lined with around 9000 devotional tiles links both buildings together.

Everything began in 1380 when a shepherd found a statue of Mary in a sand quarry, making this discovery the foundation of this sacred place. From this beginning, a major pilgrimage destination developed over the centuries.

The place draws pilgrims who come to pray and reflect on their faith. The connection between the chapel and monastery shows how religious life has been woven into this location for centuries.

The grounds are open between April and November, typically in the afternoon. It helps to visit during good weather so you can fully enjoy the pathway with its devotional tiles.

Every summer, Sinti pilgrims from across Europe gather here for a special meeting. This tradition spans more than 25 years and gives this place a distinctive, living dimension.
