Hazewind, Stellingmill in Gieten, Netherlands
Hazewind is a multistory wooden stellingmill in Gieten with a white-painted body and rotating sails. The structure stands on wooden stilts and contains grain-grinding mechanisms powered by both wind and mechanical engines.
The mill was built as a grain-grinding operation in early times to serve the rural community. Later, mechanical engines were added to increase efficiency and reduce reliance on wind power alone.
The mill's name references the wooded landscape that once surrounded this grinding operation in the northeastern countryside. Today it remains a gathering place where visitors encounter living traditions of grain processing and craft milling.
Visit on Saturday when the mill is open to the public at no charge, and you can purchase freshly ground flour produced on-site. Staff members explain how both traditional and modern machinery operates throughout your visit.
Inside the mill sit both a Ruston Proctor diesel engine and a Lloyd electric dynamo, documenting the shift in milling technology over time. These coexisting systems reveal how millers adapted to new power sources while maintaining grain production.
