Dr. Anton Philipszaal, Concert hall on Spuiplein, The Hague, Netherlands
Dr. Anton Philipszaal was a concert hall located on Spuiplein in The Hague with approximately 1800 seats distributed across the main floor and balcony levels. The building featured a distinctive pink central box structure surrounded by a dark glass shell that enclosed the performance space.
The hall opened in 1987 after the Residentie Orchestra lost its previous home to a fire. The orchestra helped fund the construction through public campaigns and record sales, using this space for performances over more than 25 years.
The hall served as the main home for the Residentie Orchestra and hosted classical music performances regularly. Ceramic wall panels created by artist Marte Röling decorated the interior and gave the space a distinctive artistic character.
The venue was centrally located on Spuiplein and easily accessible by public transport. The building closed in 2015 for demolition to make way for Amare, a new cultural center that opened in 2021 at the same location.
The structure's main concert hall was deliberately designed with a bright pink exterior that later transformed to vivid red when the original plaster needed replacement. This bold color choice made the building instantly recognizable and gave it a distinctive presence on the square.
