Lucent Danstheater, Modern dance theatre in The Hague, Netherlands
Lucent Danstheater was a theatre building in The Hague with modernist architecture and a distinctive wave-shaped roof form. The main hall held about 1000 spectators and featured an oval foyer with contemporary design styling.
The project was originally planned in 1980 as a circus theatre extension but was later relocated and completed by architect Rem Koolhaas in 1987. After decades serving as an important cultural venue, the building was partially demolished in 2015.
This venue was home to the Nederlands Dans Theater, which performed contemporary dance productions here for many years. The stage provided dancers with the same amount of space as other major international opera houses.
The theatre complex offered visitors underground parking and rehearsal facilities for performances. It is worth arriving early and exploring the surrounding area around Spui square.
The building featured an elaborate wall painting by artist Madelon Vriesendorp that was updated in 2008. This artwork was one of the visual hallmarks of the cultural venue.
