Krúsrak, Wooden traffic bridge in Sneek, Netherlands
Krúsrak is a bridge crossing the A7 highway near Sneek, connecting different city districts on either side. It features a steel road surface combined with wooden support spans that create its distinctive silhouette.
Commissioned in 2008, this bridge was the first uncovered wooden structure designed to support heavy traffic in the Netherlands. Its completion represented a turning point in the country's bridge-building practices.
The architectural design draws inspiration from traditional Frisian farmhouses while incorporating modern engineering methods typical of the Sneek region.
Separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists are provided, allowing different users to cross independently from vehicle traffic. The best time to experience the bridge is during quieter periods when you can observe the structure without distraction.
The wood was specially treated and sourced from New Zealand, giving the material exceptional durability under heavy traffic. The entire structure contains no straight lines, resulting in an unexpected organic appearance.
