Hofplein Fountain, Fountain at Hofplein, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Hofplein Fountain is a water fountain at Hofplein in Rotterdam featuring an octagonal basin surrounded by eight limestone animal sculptures. Steel water lilies positioned around the basin spray water toward a central column, creating the fountain's primary visual and water element.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1955 as a gift from shipping company Van Ommeren to Rotterdam. Architect J.R.A. Koops and sculptor Cor van Kralingen collaborated to create this public monument.
The fountain has served as a meeting place for locals and visitors since its creation, becoming more animated during celebrations when the water displays change color. People gather around it to mark important moments in the city's life.
The fountain operates through an underground system that maintains water circulation and keeps the water clean. The lighting system is controlled remotely, making it visible even when weather changes.
The eight animal sculptures that decorate the fountain also serve a practical purpose as drainage gutters. This combination of art and function shows how the designers merged beauty with engineering.
