Weenatoren, Office and residential tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands
The Weenatoren is a 31-story tower reaching 106 meters in height with office spaces on lower floors and residential apartments above. The lower section comprises 13 office floors while the upper section contains residential units arranged across 18 floors.
Construction began in 1988 and the building was completed in 1990, designed by the architectural firm Klunder Architecten. It emerged during Rotterdam's period of urban reconstruction following World War II destruction.
The tower represents a shift in how Rotterdam integrated work and living spaces within its city center during urban renewal. This blending of offices and homes in one building became typical of the city's approach to downtown development.
The building includes parking for 363 vehicles and sits above an underground metro line, making public transportation access convenient. The residential sections are positioned to minimize street noise, offering quieter living conditions for occupants.
The structure features an unusual form combining a circle and rectangle, making it visually distinct from other high-rises in the area. This geometric combination was a deliberate design choice that served both functional and architectural purposes.
