Museum De Buitenplaats, Art museum in Eelde, Netherlands
Museum De Buitenplaats is an art museum in Tynaarlo centered around a seventeenth-century manor house called Nijsinghhuis, with exhibition spaces integrated into the grounds. The site features several distinct outdoor areas including a maze, pond garden, and apple orchard.
The museum opened in 1996 through the vision of founder Janneke Hazenberg, establishing a cultural institution at this historic location. Converting a country manor into an art venue with gardens transformed how the grounds were used and experienced.
Dutch artists Matthijs Röling, Clary Mastenbroek, and Olga Wiese created murals inside Nijsinghhuis that show regional artistic traditions. These works shape how visitors experience the building and connect contemporary art to its historic rooms.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with paid admission for adults and free entry for children under 17. Plan to spend enough time exploring both the indoor exhibitions and the outdoor gardens, as the grounds contain multiple connected areas to discover.
The gardens were designed by landscape architect Jørn Copijn and garden architect Charlotte Korthals Altes as three separate outdoor rooms. This thoughtful garden design makes the entire grounds function as a kind of walkable artwork extending beyond the exhibitions inside.
