Tynaarlo, municipality in Drenthe, the Netherlands
Tynaarlo is a municipality in northern Netherlands within Drenthe province and consists of eighteen official village communities, including Vries as the administrative center, Eelde with its nearby airport, and Zuidlaren known for its traditional events. The landscape features flat terrain with fields, forests, and two major lakes, the Zuidlaardermeer and Paterswoldsemeer, crisscrossed by paths where visitors walk and cycle.
The region was first mentioned in a document from the year 820 as Villa Arlo and had grown to about sixty homes by 1850. Three former municipalities, Eelde, Vries, and Zuidlaren, merged in 1998 to create the new municipality of Tynaarlo, choosing a neutral name to include all settlements equally.
The name Tynaarlo refers to an old forest area, and this historical connection shapes how residents view their community today. Local markets and festivals regularly bring people together to celebrate regional crafts and food, strengthening bonds between the different villages that make up the municipality.
The municipality is well connected by roads and bus lines to nearby cities like Groningen and Assen, but there is no active train station within Tynaarlo. Visitors find public spaces such as parks, nature reserves, and walking paths that are accessible free of charge throughout the year.
The name Tynaarlo was deliberately chosen to equally represent three merged municipalities after an original proposal to name it Zuidlaren was rejected by residents. This unusual naming reflects the municipality's wish to treat all its different parts with equal respect.
