De Onlanden, Nature reserve near Groningen, Netherlands.
De Onlanden is a nature reserve spanning marshlands, meadows, and waterways between Groningen and the Drenthe province. The area covers expansive wetland habitats that visitors can explore along marked walking paths.
The area was a walking route for monks from Aduard monastery in the Middle Ages, who passed through on their way to the church in Vries village. This religious path connected early settlements across the region.
The name Onlanden was selected through a competition organized by five local nature associations and historical societies in 2009.
A 26-meter observation tower offers wide views over the wetlands and can be reached from several entry points. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear, as the paths lead through damp terrain.
The area functions as a water retention zone protecting Groningen from flooding while hosting over 120 bird species that breed here. This dual function makes it important for both nature conservation and flood management.
