Westpark, Urban park in Groningen, Netherlands
Westpark is an urban green space in Groningen located between the Vinkhuizen district, De Held neighborhood, and the Hoendiep canal. The grounds feature open grass areas, water bodies, and pathways suited for walking and spending time outdoors.
The area was meadowland with small settlements like Leegkerk and Dorkwerd until the 20th century, when soil from a sugar factory was used to elevate the terrain. This transformation marked the shift from rural to urban use.
The park layout follows an Italian mosaic theme, introduced as part of the 'City of Tomorrow' structural plan presented in 1994.
The park features a lake for water skiing, managed by the VariaSki association since 2008 and open to interested visitors. Pathways are well-maintained and entry points are accessible from multiple directions.
Since 2020, the park has housed 24 tiny houses where residents practice sustainable living through shared resources and eco-friendly practices. This small community demonstrates a modern approach to dwelling and land use.
