Gas Molecule, Roadside sculpture near A7 highway in Kolham, Netherlands

The Gas Molecule sculpture stands 8 meters tall and represents a methane molecule with one blue carbon atom surrounded by four hydrogen atoms.

The artwork was unveiled by Queen Beatrix on June 16, 2009, marking the 50th anniversary of natural gas discovery in the Groningen region.

This scientific art installation connects natural gas extraction with public art, representing the molecular structure that influenced the regional development.

Travelers can observe the large-scale sculpture from multiple angles while driving along the A7 highway between Groningen and Hoogezand.

The Gas Molecule structure will be removed from its location by April 30, 2024, ending its presence as a symbol of energy production.
