Gas Molecule

Gas Molecule is a large roadside sculpture along the A7 highway in Kolham that shows a methane molecule with a blue carbon atom at its center and four hydrogen atoms arranged around it. The structure reaches several meters into the air and can be viewed from different angles as you travel past.

The artwork was unveiled in 2009 to mark 50 years since natural gas was discovered in the Groningen region. This installation reflects the importance of this energy source in the area's history and development.

This work of art connects natural gas extraction with public creativity, showing a molecular shape that shaped the region's growth. People passing by can feel this link between science and local identity.

You can best see this sculpture while driving along the A7 highway between Groningen and Hoogezand, where it stands clearly visible from the road. Pull into a safe spot if you want to take photos or spend more time looking at it.
