Midden-Groningen, Municipality in Groningen Province, Netherlands.
Midden-Groningen is a municipality in Groningen Province consisting of several villages and hamlets including Hoogezand, Sappemeer, Slochteren, and Zuidbroek. The area spreads across flat farmland with green spaces and meandering waterways typical of the Dutch lowlands.
This municipality was formed on January 1, 2018, when three separate municipalities merged: Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Slochteren, and Menterwolde. The consolidation brought together communities with distinct local histories and economic paths into one administrative area.
Residents participated directly in naming their municipality in 2016, choosing Midden-Groningen through a vote among three options. This democratic process created a shared identity across the previously separate communities that merged together.
Services and amenities are distributed across the villages, making it accessible to reach different areas of the municipality. The flat landscape makes it easy to explore by bicycle, which is a practical way to move through the region.
The region contains significant natural gas reserves that shaped economic development since their discovery in the mid-1900s. These deposits made the area an important energy producer within the Netherlands.
