Midden-Groningen, Municipality in Groningen Province, Netherlands.
Midden-Groningen is a municipality in the Dutch province of Groningen, made up of several villages and smaller settlements, including Hoogezand, Sappemeer, Slochteren, and Zuidbroek. The land is flat and open, crossed by canals and drainage ditches, with farmland stretching between the built-up areas.
On January 1, 2018, three separate municipalities merged to form this one: Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Slochteren, and Menterwolde. Each of the three had its own past shaped by peat extraction, farming, and the use of inland waterways that defined much of the region's development.
The name Midden-Groningen simply means Middle Groningen, referring to where it sits within the province. Each village in the area still feels like its own place, with its own center, church, and local rhythm that has not changed much since the merger.
The main villages are reachable by bus, but a bicycle is the easiest way to get around in this flat part of the country. The settlements are spread out, so it is worth planning your route before setting off if you want to visit more than one.
The ground beneath this municipality holds some of the largest natural gas reserves in the Netherlands, and decades of extraction have caused earthquakes across the area. These tremors have damaged buildings in many villages and pushed the region into the center of a national debate about energy and compensation.
