Zuilenburg

Zuilenburg is a residential tower in Overlangbroek with thick brick walls and a clear vertical structure made up of a basement and upper floor. The architecture shows the classic features of medieval fortifications, with massive walls that provided protection and stability.

The castle was founded in 1270 and originally belonged to Gijsbrecht van Zuylen, an important nobleman of the time. The van Zuylen family retained the property until 1360, underscoring its long significance in their hands.

The castle reflects the medieval history of noble families who shaped this part of Utrecht. The van Zuylen family left traces of their influence and power in the region.

The castle is located on Langbroekerdijk and is now a private residence under national monument protection. Visitors should note that the building is not open to the public and can only be admired from the outside.

Unlike many other castles in the region, Zuilenburg was independent for a long time and not subject to any local feudal lord. This independence made it a rare example of a free noble residence in the medieval Utrecht area.
