Sijthoff Building, Brutalist building in Plaspoelpolder, Netherlands
The Sijthoff Building is a brutalist structure in Rijswijk with a cubic form composed of exposed concrete and bold geometric patterns. Its raw surfaces and clean lines define its striking external appearance.
The building was inaugurated in 1981 and initially served as headquarters for Sijthoff Press. Until 2009 it housed the editorial offices of the newspaper AD Haagsche Courant before its purpose shifted.
The structure reflects Dutch design values of the 1980s, when architects favored bold concrete forms and geometric clarity. It stands as a visible example of how commercial buildings expressed modern thinking through architectural language.
The building sits near the A4 motorway and is easily accessible by road. It is currently undergoing conversion into a hotel with 220 rooms while remaining within strict height restrictions.
The structure will become part of a larger development area with residential towers of varying heights. This transformation shows how former industrial sites are becoming mixed-use neighborhoods today.
