Oude stadhuis van Rijswijk, Former city hall in Rijswijk, Netherlands
The Rijswijk city hall is a modern administrative building featuring a distinctive bell tower containing 47 bells, positioned near a pond and fountain on Generaal Spoorlaan. The structure has been fully updated with solar power and improved insulation integrated into its natural stone exterior.
Architect J.C. van Buijtenen designed the building between 1964 and 1967 as the city experienced rapid growth. The structure later underwent restoration and returned to municipal use in 2023 after a period of vacancy.
The building takes its name from the Dutch tradition of civic centers serving as symbols of local identity. Today it brings together municipal services, an arts venue, and a library under one roof, creating a shared space for residents.
The location is straightforward to find on Generaal Spoorlaan, marked by a pond and fountain that serve as natural reference points. The modernized building welcomes visitors inside and offers multiple services and venues for browsing and attending events.
The building sat vacant for 15 years and nearly faced demolition before undergoing major restoration work. This second chance saved an important landmark from being lost.
