Varodd Bridge, Cantilever bridge in Kristiansand, Norway
Varodd Bridge is a concrete cantilever crossing that spans Topdalsfjord and links the eastern and western areas of Kristiansand Municipality. The structure comprises two parallel bridges designed to carry road traffic, public transport, and a combined pedestrian-cycling path.
An original suspension bridge from 1956 was Norway's longest of its kind until 1972, when that distinction passed to another crossing. Modern concrete structures replaced it, with construction completed in stages during 1994 and 2020.
The bridge functions as the eastern gateway to Kristiansand, marking a significant landmark visible from the archipelago, fjord, and surrounding residential districts.
The bridge carries both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, with clear markings for each type of user and good visibility across the water. Peak hours bring heavy congestion, so plan your crossing accordingly to avoid the busiest times.
During construction, an initial 400-meter section was built at 17 meters wide, then expanded by 2 meters after removing the old bridge. This staged approach allowed traffic to continue uninterrupted during the modernization work.
