Cathedral Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Tarnów

The Cathedral Basilica is a large brick structure featuring three naves, an elongated chancel, and a western tower rising 72 meters. The building displays characteristic Gothic features including pointed arches throughout its design.

The original building was founded in 1330 when Spycimir Leliwita, castellan of Kraków, began construction of the first brick church at this location. Over the following centuries, the structure underwent various architectural modifications that expanded and enhanced its design.

The cathedral serves as the main religious center for the city and remains in active use for worship services today. Its interior spaces reveal layers of architectural changes from different periods that visitors can observe throughout their visit.

The main entrance through the northern portal is accessible to visitors and displays preserved Gothic elements from the early 15th century. Plan adequate time to explore the interior, as the building's size and details provide plenty to observe throughout your visit.

The building contains multiple chapels added over centuries, including one from 1415 commemorating a major military victory of the region. This chapel stands as a reminder of how religious spaces connected to important historical moments in local life.
