Starościńskie Skały, Natural rock formation in Strużnica, Poland
Starościńskie Skały is a sandstone rock formation in the Karkonosze mountains that consists of distinct stacked layers visible across its face. The surface reveals deep grooves and natural fissures shaped by water and weather exposure over countless years.
The formation developed during the Cretaceous period when an ancient sea covered this region, depositing layers of sediment that hardened over millions of years. After the sea receded, these rock layers became exposed and continued to be shaped by natural weathering processes.
Local mountaineers regularly organize educational tours around the formation to teach visitors about the geological processes that shaped the Lower Silesian landscape.
The formation can be reached by marked hiking trails departing from Strużnica village, with spring through autumn offering the most favorable visiting conditions. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the trails and rock surfaces can be slippery, especially after wet weather.
Within the crevices and small caves of these rocks lives a specialized community of rare moss species and invertebrates found almost nowhere else in the region. These isolated habitats form their own distinct ecological niche that develops undisturbed over time.
