Rokitnica Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Rokitnica, Poland
Rokitnica Castle is a stone fortification ruin located on the right bank of the Kaczawa River in Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The remaining fragments reveal a rectangular floor plan measuring 38 by 44 meters.
The structure was built in the early 13th century under Duke Henry I the Bearded, who commissioned this fortification in his lands. It later functioned as a customs checkpoint on major trade routes connecting the region until the mid-15th century.
The castle walls witnessed the presence of Saint Hedwig of Silesia, who frequented this location with her husband Duke Henry I in the 13th century.
A tree-lined path with oak trees provides access to the ruins, and parking is available on the road connecting Rokitnica to Prusice. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the site sits on uneven ground.
The structure exhibits a notably regular rectangular shape that sets it apart as one of the earliest stone fortifications of its kind built in the region. This geometric precision was uncommon for defensive buildings of that era.
