Kopalnia Złota Aurelia w Złotoryi

Kopalnia Złota Aurelia is an underground mine near Złotoryja with tunnels extending about 100 meters into the rock, displaying different rock layers and equipment from various mining periods. Visitors walk through passages that were expanded over centuries and now show different stages of extraction techniques and mining tools.

Work on the new tunnels started in 1661, but beneath the surface were traces of much older passages from the 14th and 15th centuries. These remains show that people had been searching for resources here long before organized mining operations began.

The museum displays tools and techniques from different eras that visitors can examine firsthand, giving a sense of how miners worked in these tunnels. The exhibits show a craft that shaped generations of people in this region.

Wear sturdy footwear since the tunnels have uneven ground and the temperature stays cool year-round underground. Protective helmets are provided, and the passages are narrow, so a basic level of fitness helps when exploring the mine.

Historical records show that miners had to process enormous quantities of material to extract only tiny amounts of gold from this site. These numbers reveal how harsh and often unrewarding the work was that defined this mining operation.
