Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Łąg

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Gothic brick structure featuring a square tower and stellar vaults supported by octagonal pillars. The building displays the characteristic proportions and construction details typical of medieval parish churches in the region.

The site became a place of Christian worship around 1124 when Saint Otto of Bamberg established a chapel there. The brick church visible today began construction in the fourteenth century, reflecting the community's resources and religious commitment at that time.

The building follows the traditional west-east orientation found throughout medieval religious structures in the region. Its brick construction with granite foundations shows how local builders worked with available materials to create lasting structures.

The church is located in the small village of Łąg and welcomes visitors, particularly during times of regular worship services. The solid brick and stone construction keeps the interior cool year-round, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea when exploring the space.

Fires throughout its history, notably one in 1677, destroyed all the original medieval furnishings and decorations inside the building. As a result, everything seen inside today dates from later restoration work, giving it a different character than churches that kept their original contents.
