Kręgi Kamienne Nature Reserve, Archaeological stone circles nature reserve in Odry, Poland
Kręgi Kamienne Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in a pine forest containing ten complete stone circles and two fragments, with stones protruding from the ground between 20 to 70 centimeters. Each circle contains between 16 and 29 stones and varies in diameter from 15 to 33 meters.
The site served as a Gothic cemetery during the first and second centuries AD, with archaeological excavations revealing more than 600 burials containing Roman ceramics. These findings show close trade connections and cultural exchange between the local population and the Roman world.
The stone circles carry local names reflecting their forest location, and visitors can see how the stones are arranged in clear patterns that catch the eye immediately. The layout reveals how important order and structure were to the people who created these burial places.
The area spans 16.91 hectares with marked trails, along which information boards explain archaeological and natural features. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the forest floor can be uneven and becomes damp after rain.
The reserve houses 40 lichen species and 6 moss species, including mountain varieties rarely found in lowland areas, growing on the ancient stones. This unexpected diversity makes the site interesting for naturalists.
