Orthodox church of the Dormition in Białystok-Starosielce, Eastern Orthodox church in Starosielce district, Białystok, Poland.
The Orthodox Church of the Dormition is a brick structure with five domes and a single nave, its architecture symbolically representing the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The building's design and spatial arrangement follow traditional principles of Orthodox sacred architecture.
Construction began in the early 1980s when Bishop Sawa initiated the project to serve Orthodox believers who were moving from rural areas to Białystok. The project faced obstacles before its completion in 1999.
The interior walls display frescoes created by iconographers from Donetsk, who combined traditional Orthodox artistic principles with modern design approaches. These images shape the space and guide worshippers through their spiritual experience.
The church is open during regular services conducted in Old Church Slavonic language. Visitors should dress modestly and note that head coverings are customary for women while men should keep their heads uncovered.
The building proved remarkably resilient, overcoming serious obstacles including an arson attempt during its construction to reach completion. This has made it a symbol of perseverance for the local Orthodox community.
