Heringsbuden consists of eight three-story buildings featuring Renaissance facades on the market square of Legnica. The townhouses display classical architectural elements and detailed ornamental work on their exterior surfaces, with some showing decorative techniques and structural features from different periods.
Construction of these buildings began in 1574 on a site where market structures had previously stood. Below the townhouses lie Gothic vaults from the original settlement, revealing how the location developed over centuries.
The name comes from medieval herring stalls that once occupied this spot. Visitors walking through the market square can observe how these buildings create distinct visual sections of the plaza with their varying facades and architectural details.
These buildings occupy the central market square and are easily accessible from anywhere in the city center. Restaurants, shops, and public transport stops surround the area, making navigation and planning your visit straightforward.
Two of the buildings display sgraffito decorations dating to 1570 featuring the coat of arms of the Duchy of Legnica-Brzeg. Portrait medallions of male and female figures accompany the heraldic design, adding personal touches visitors might otherwise miss.
