Monumentum Piasteum, Gothic mausoleum in Saint John the Baptist Church, Legnica, Poland.
Monumentum Piasteum is an octagonal mausoleum with a decorated flat dome inside Saint John the Baptist Church. The space holds several niches containing royal sarcophagi and stone figures arranged throughout its interior.
A duchess commissioned this monument between 1677 and 1679 in honor of her son, who was the last male Piast duke. Its creation marked the end of the Piast dynasty's rule in the region.
The alabaster figures inside show members of the ducal family frozen in silent poses that feel very personal. They seem caught in a private moment, making the space feel like an intimate family gathering rather than a formal monument.
You can visit this mausoleum during regular church hours by entering through the main door of the church. Going early in the day helps you see the stone details clearly in natural light.
The dome features a representation of the Greek sun god using the facial features of the deceased duke. This blends classical mythology with local ruler identity in an unexpected way.
