Portimão Circuit, automobile race course in Portimão, Portugal
The Portimão Circuit is a motorsport racing track located in the city of Portimão in southern Portugal, featuring a hilly layout with many turns spread across approximately 4.6 kilometers (2.9 miles). Beyond the track itself, the site includes a hotel, a karting track, and a technology park on the surrounding grounds.
The Portimão Circuit opened in 2008, designed by architect Ricardo Pina to create a track suited to international racing. In 2020, it hosted the Formula One Grand Prix of Portugal for the first time since 1996, bringing renewed attention to the sport in the country.
The circuit carries the name of the city of Portimão and draws motorsport fans from across Europe who gather around the corners and grandstands on race weekends. On event days, the site becomes a meeting point where spectators can watch the action from several different vantage points around the track.
The grounds are easy to walk around, and the grandstands offer clear views of several sections of the track. On race days, arriving early is a good idea since the site gets much busier than on regular days.
One corner of the track is named after motorcycle rider Craig Jones, who died following a crash at the British Superbike Championship in 2008. The grounds also feature a monument made of marble and stainless steel that represents the final corner, where race outcomes often change in the closing seconds.
