Labudovo okno

Labudovo okno is a wetland along the Danube River featuring floodplains, marshes, and shallow water zones in the Pannonian lowlands. The landscape contains varying water depths and vegetation types that create habitats for diverse wildlife.

The completion of the Iron Gate dam in the late 1960s raised and stabilized Danube water levels, creating new aquatic habitats. These hydrological changes allowed waterfowl and fish populations to flourish in ways not possible before the dam's construction.

Communities of different backgrounds have lived in the surrounding villages for generations, shaping local traditions and daily life near the wetland. This coexistence is visible in the settlements and farming practices that border the protected area.

Bring binoculars to observe birds from accessible viewing points, especially in winter when large flocks arrive to feed. Dress in layers and bring rain gear, as the open terrain offers little shelter from wind and weather.

This site serves as a spawning ground for numerous fish species during their breeding season. In winter, rare bird species such as pygmy cormorants and white-fronted geese concentrate here, making it a globally important refuge.
