Alkhanay National Park

Alkhanay National Park is a protected area in Zabaykalsky Krai that preserves forests, mountains, and grasslands across its territory. The landscape transitions from lower woodland-steppe regions to higher alpine zones with different plant communities at each level.

The park was officially established in 1999 to protect the natural landscapes of the region. The mountain itself carries a name rooted in local legend about a princess who sought shelter at its peak.

Mount Alkhanai holds sacred meaning for the Buryat people, who come here to pray and perform rituals that have been part of their traditions for generations. You'll notice prayer flags and offerings scattered throughout the park, visible signs of how deeply this place matters to local communities.

Summer and early autumn offer the best visiting conditions, when trails are accessible and weather is generally favorable. Wear sturdy footwear and bring layers, as temperatures change noticeably depending on elevation within the park.

The park contains more than 300 plant species distributed across different elevation zones, each supporting distinct forest types. This diversity is striking because it shows how elevation and climate create such varied ecosystems within a relatively compact area.
