The first recorded mention dates to the 16th century when a wooden church was built to honor Archangel Michael. In the 18th century, the estate became a cultural center under the Golitsyn family, and later the Yusupov family acquired it in the early 1800s and transformed it into a major noble residence.
The Church of Archangel Michael, built in 1667, stands at the heart of the estate's identity and shapes how the place is experienced. The entire property takes its name from this church, which remains the oldest building still standing on the grounds.
