The Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science operates fifteen research laboratories and a specialized center called Nanotech across five buildings in Tomsk Academic City.

The institute originated from the Department of Solid State Physics and Materials at the Institute of Atmospheric Optics in 1979 before its establishment in 1984.

The facility employs 420 staff members, including 146 researchers and 44 doctors of science who contribute to international scientific conferences and publications.
