Tower of Concord, Medieval tower reconstruction in Magas, Russia.
The Tower of Concord is a tower in the center of Magas, the capital of the Republic of Ingushetia in Russia. It was built in the style of traditional Ingush stone towers, scaled up considerably, and features a long spiral ramp that winds from the base to an observation deck near the top.
The tower was completed in 2013, funded by a local businessman named Alikhan Kharsiev who wanted to honor the old Ingush tower-building tradition in a new form. The medieval towers that inspired it were built by mountain clans for defense and still stand in the highland villages of Ingushetia.
The tower's name refers to the idea of unity among the Ingush people, and it was designed to be shared by all clans rather than belonging to one family. Visitors who look at the exterior can see decorative stone carvings that echo the style of traditional Ingush towers found in mountain villages.
Getting to the top means walking the entire spiral ramp on foot, since there is no elevator inside the building. The walk is long, so comfortable shoes and a reasonable level of fitness will make the visit easier.
The observation deck has a section with a glass floor, so visitors can look straight down through it to the city below. The interior walls along the ramp also display paintings by Ingush artists showing scenes from local myths and legends.
