Дом Гармошка, Architectural landmark on Karl Marx Street, Voronezh, Russia.
Dom Garmoshka is a residential building in Voronezh made up of several connected sections that form a zigzag pattern when viewed from above. The structure bends around the intersection of two streets, creating a distinctive shape that resembles an accordion.
Architect N.V. Troitsky designed this residential building in 1929 as an innovative solution for the intersection where two streets met. The project emerged during a period when Soviet architects were exploring new forms to make better use of urban space.
The building reflects early Soviet design thinking, where architects found creative ways to work with difficult street corners and irregular lots. Today it stands as a practical example of how buildings shaped themselves to fit the constraints of city planning rather than vice versa.
The building sits near Nikitinsky Theater and is reachable by public transportation with stops within walking distance. Since it remains an active residential complex, visitors should view the exterior from the street and be respectful of residents.
The interior walls of each apartment do not follow regular right angles because the angled exterior walls of the zigzag design force walls inside to be non-parallel. This creates distinctly unusual room shapes that differ from standard apartment layouts found elsewhere.
