Smolinskaya Cave, Protected limestone cave near Beklenishcheva village, Russia
The Smolinskaya Cave system extends for 890 meters through interconnected corridors and chambers, reaching depths of over 30 meters beneath the surface.
First documented exploration of the cave occurred in 1890, followed by detailed mapping efforts by local researcher Vasily Olesov in 1895.
Orthodox monks inhabited the cave during the 1850s, naming its chambers with religious references such as Great Cell, Altar, and Paradise.
The cave entrance, positioned 12 meters above ground level on the right bank of a ravine, requires proper safety equipment and guidance.
Until the mid-20th century, the cave housed Europe's largest colony of water bats, which significantly decreased due to increased human visits.
