Центральный рынок, Market complex in Kaluga, Russia
The Central Market of Kaluga was a market building containing a large interior space divided into multiple trading zones. The structure, designed by architect Nodar Kancheli in 1976, provided about 600 stalls for vendors selling various goods.
The market building replaced an earlier trading area that had occupied Sadovaya Street since the 18th century. The modern structure constructed in 1976 continued a long tradition of commerce at that location.
The market served as a gathering place where residents shopped for fresh goods from local farmers and producers. Daily interactions between vendors and buyers shaped the rhythm of neighborhood life.
The market was situated in the city center and easily accessible to visitors from different neighborhoods. The building was organized to make shopping and navigation straightforward for regular visitors.
The building was completely demolished in 2021, ending a 45-year market tradition at that location. This demolition marked the end of an era of direct commerce between vendors and shoppers in the city center.
