Торопецкий кремль

The Toropets Kremlin is a medieval fortress with two fortified settlements on the banks of Lake Solomeno. The earthen ramparts reach heights of about 9 meters and form the main defensive structure of the site.

The site received its first written mention in 1074 in the Hypatian Codex, documenting events tied to the monastery community. By 1586, wooden towers were added on the earth bastions to improve defensive capabilities and create flanking fire angles.

The fortress served as the heart of community life, drawing merchants and craftspeople who settled along its riverbanks over many centuries. The remains tell the story of a thriving medieval settlement where people built their lives and conducted trade.

Wear sturdy footwear since the earthen ramparts have uneven terrain that can be slippery in wet conditions. The best time to explore is during dry weather when the paths are easier to navigate.

Archaeological digs have uncovered numerous artifacts including pottery, weapons, and jewelry from medieval times. These discoveries are now displayed in the former Epiphany Church, which operates as the Regional Museum today.
