Gunib Fortress, Military fortress in Gunib, Russia
The fortress extends along a three-kilometer stone wall, incorporating natural mountain defenses with steep cliffs and deep ravines at 1500 meters elevation.
The fortress marks the location where Imam Shamil, leader of the Caucasian resistance, surrendered to Russian forces in August 1859, ending the Caucasian War.
The Bariatinsky Gates and Shamil Gates, two primary entrances to the fortress, represent the architectural military engineering methods of 19th-century Dagestan.
Visitors can explore the preserved commandant building, underground water supply tunnel, and defensive walls through guided tours from Makhachkala or Gunib village.
The fortress complex includes a rotunda with an imperial double-headed eagle, built at the exact spot where Field Marshal Bariatinsky interrogated Imam Shamil.
