Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge, Architectural bridge in Tverskoy District, Moscow, Russia.
Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge is a deck arch bridge that spans the Moskva River and links the center of Moscow with the southern bank. The roadway divides into several lanes, with pedestrian paths on both sides offering space for walkers and direct sightlines toward historic buildings.
The current construction was completed in 1938 and replaced an older crossing that could no longer handle growing traffic. It stands where the first stone bridge of Moscow appeared in 1687, which represented a technical novelty at the time.
The name translates to Great Stone Bridge and recalls the first masonry crossing built at this spot centuries ago. Today it serves as a viewing platform for walkers and photographers who use its wide pavements to look toward the Kremlin and the cathedral.
It can be reached on foot from the Kremlin side or from the southern bank, with pavements that remain walkable throughout and pose no particular obstacles. A visit in the early morning or late afternoon offers quieter conditions and clear views of the surroundings.
The arches below the roadway are so tall they were once designed to allow river traffic on the Moskva without disrupting car movement above. Their proportions reveal the thirties ambition to shape even technical structures on a grand scale.
